Awards and Classics of Children's Literature
Spring 2009
Instructor - Laura Apol
One might assume that the ‘classics’ are awarding winning books, but as we discovered that is not always the case. The most popular and best read books do not necessarily win any awards. This course took us through the types of awards that are given and what it might take to be considered. As a part of our review we asked ourselves about our own ‘best’ books and what connection their might be between personal evaluation and socially constructed meanings for ‘good,’ ‘better’ and ‘best.’ We read 'Little Women' and also watched two movie adaptations of this story, my paper on this deals with the issues of wealth and poverty. My final paper deals with the issue of choice and how that impacts a book's designation as a classic.

Sharing Leadership in Schools
Fall 2009
Instructor - Barbara Meloche
Sharing leadership in schools is an essential component to achieving successful student outcomes. This course showed me that most evidence indicates that those individuals in formal leadership roles, such as a Principal, set up the environment for other professionals to work and succeed but they actually have little direct impact on student achievement and engagement. The sharing of leadership with those in informal roles, such as a Teacher, is necessary to effect student performance. This induction plan I developed for a new teacher is from the perspective of the Principal and shows how the Principal, mentor teacher and new teacher work together to grow and achieve success. This short paper discusses the two major elements of leadership that I discovered in this course.
