Psychology of Learning in School & Other Settings
Spring 2011
Instructors - Cary Roseth and Sandra Sawaya
Psychological theories about learning were examined in this course including behaviorism, social constructivism and observational theory. The purpose was to understand learning inside and outside of school. Examining the situations in which we learn provides meaning into how we learn and recognizing that our learning environments will change pushed us into new mediums. As a part of understanding how new technologies impact learning I interviewed one of my son’s and created an audio file of the interview. I also created an audio/video file when working with my youngest son on reading comprehension. Both media files were posted to my first blog that I set up as part of this course. I have re-posted these files there because I had taken them down when I used the blog for another course.
Examples of my coursework:
Audio File - Interview
Audio/Video File - Reading Comprehension

History of American Education
Summer 2011
Instructor - Matt Missias
In this course the origins of public education in America were covered with an eye towards identifying the roots of different concerns and problems that exist within the educational community today. The time periods covered were the common school era, the progressive education era, the civil rights era and the modern era. Issues explored, as these eras were explored, were race, religion, social class, ethnicity, economics, political and cultural identities. A recurring theme throughout the course and spanning all the eras is whether schools change society or society changes school. All of my reflection papers, that were completed each week, are posted on my blog. My critical response paper made the case for a national curriculum and my final paper is on the subject of the history of early childhood education.

Training and Professional Development
Fall 2011
Instructor - John Dirkx
Individuals who expect to plan or provide professional development opportunities or are responsible for ensuring that professional development is part of the culture of their organization were the target audience for this course. What purpose does professional development fulfill? What theories about human development guide professional development? What strategies are useful for designing, delivering and assessing professional development? These were questions we examined and as we attempted to answer them we quickly learned that professional development is about lifelong learning. This case study was completed as a group project and was an analysis of professional development that did not work. My capstone paper was about my ideas on professional development and the context within which I expected to use them.
